Lead and shape underwriting strategy for a specialized portfolio in the Upper Mid-West, overseeing a team of underwriters or underwriting managers. This role is responsible for setting performance standards, guiding decision-making on complex risks, and ensuring sustained profitability across the assigned business segment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead by example to promote a culture of disciplined underwriting and continuous improvement
- Act as the primary contact for challenging or unique underwriting cases, providing guidance and resolution
- Build and maintain strong, trust-based relationships with external brokers and agents through regular in-person engagement
- Drive team development through coaching, mentorship, and performance accountability
- Represent core company values in all interactions, both internally and in the marketplace
- Contribute directly to underwriting when necessary, maintaining hands-on expertise
- Support broader organizational initiatives and step in for management coverage as needed
Qualifications
Candidates must have at least 10 years of progressive underwriting experience, including a minimum of two years in a leadership capacity. Strong strategic thinking, communication, and decision-making skills are essential. A proven track record in portfolio management, problem solving, and team development is required. Professional designations such as CPCU or a business degree are preferred.
This position requires residency within the Upper Mid-West region and frequent local travel to meet with partners. Remote work from outside the territory is not supported.
