About the Role

FedWriters, Inc., a Washington Post Top Workplace, is hiring a Scientific Technical Writer/Editor II to join our team supporting the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). You will be the Weather Program Office's primary technical writer and editor, transforming complex scientific findings into clear, engaging narratives that showcase research successes for Congress, stakeholders, and the public.

What You'll Do

  • Develop compelling win stories and impact narratives that communicate the value of WPO-funded research to diverse audiences.
  • Apply expert knowledge of AP style and journalistic standards to all written materials.
  • Collaborate with Principal Investigators and program managers to gather and translate technical information into accessible content.
  • Write and edit technical documents, including research summaries, program reports, fact sheets, web content, and press releases.
  • Conduct interviews with researchers and stakeholders to gather information for stories and human-interest angles.
  • Edit scientific documents, proposals, and reports for clarity, accuracy, and adherence to style guidelines.
  • Support strategic communications by developing content for congressional briefings, budget justifications, and presentations.
  • Ensure consistent messaging and branding by collaborating with the communications team.
  • Research scientific developments and policy changes to ensure content is accurate and timely.
  • Manage multiple writing projects simultaneously, meeting tight deadlines while maintaining high quality standards.

What We're Looking For

  • A Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, English, atmospheric science, or a related technical field.
  • 4+ years of professional experience in technical writing, science communication, or journalism.
  • Expert proficiency in AP style writing and editing for scientific content.
  • Demonstrated experience developing win stories or impact narratives for technical achievements.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for translating complex science into engaging content.
  • Proven ability to interview subject matter experts and synthesize information from multiple sources.
  • A track record of working independently and managing multiple projects with competing deadlines.
  • Strong research skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to technical accuracy.
  • Proficiency with content management systems, document collaboration tools, and digital publishing platforms.
  • Understanding of federal communication requirements and stakeholder engagement principles.

Nice to Have

  • An advanced degree in journalism, technical writing, communications, or a scientific field with a writing emphasis.
  • Professional certification in technical writing (STC) or journalism credentials.
  • Experience in science communication, specifically in meteorology or atmospheric science.
  • A background working with federal agencies, research institutions, or scientific organizations.
  • Familiarity with NOAA programs, weather research, and operational meteorology.
  • Experience with digital content creation, social media writing, and multi-platform publishing.
  • A portfolio showcasing successful win stories, impact narratives, and technical communication work.
  • Experience with media relations, press release writing, and public affairs support.
