AECOM is hiring a Protection and Controls Engineer (P.E.) - Substations - Remote (U.S.)

Position Overview

A licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) is sought to lead electrical protection and control design efforts for substations, switchyards, and related power systems. This role supports the Grid Modernization practice, working on both new and existing infrastructure across transmission, distribution, renewables, and emerging energy technologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the lead engineer for protection and control systems on greenfield and retrofit projects
  • Perform detailed electrical engineering design and act as engineer of record
  • Collaborate with project engineers and managers to define design timelines and engineering budgets
  • Conduct power system studies and coordinate relay protection settings
  • Develop technical documentation outlining protection logic and relay configurations
  • Provide field support during construction, commissioning, and startup phases
  • Review peer designs for accuracy and compliance
  • Participate in client discussions and technical reviews
  • Travel occasionally for site assessments, data collection, and field inspections
  • Guide early-career engineers and contribute to internal training when needed

Qualifications

  • Valid Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in the United States
  • Proven knowledge of electrical design principles and power system technologies
  • Strong ability to collaborate within multidisciplinary teams
  • Clear and effective communication skills with technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Demonstrated initiative, focus, and commitment to project success
  • Exceptional attention to detail in design and documentation

Work Environment

This position offers flexibility, allowing remote work or a hybrid arrangement from any U.S.-based office location. Occasional travel to project or client sites may be required.
