AECOM is looking for a Principal Engineer (Primary Substation) to join our Transmission & Distribution team in India. You will contribute to impactful global energy projects, developing your technical expertise within a supportive and high-performing team.
What You'll Do
- Prepare designs and deliverables for primary electrical systems on transmission and distribution projects.
- Design primary substation systems, including AIS/GIS configurations, transformer installations, circuit breaker selection, busbar arrangements, switchgear layouts, and disconnectors for voltages up to 800kV.
- Prepare single-line diagrams (SLDs), general arrangement (GA) layouts, equipment sizing, and equipment layout plans for substations and transmission systems.
- Perform short-circuit force calculations, busbar sizing, fault current analysis, and equipment protection design.
- Design earthing systems, including grounding layouts, ground grid system design, and lightning protection systems for substations.
- Design and integrate HVDC and HVAC systems, including converter stations.
- Develop transformer layouts, including oil containment, busduct routing, and secondary system interfaces.
- Optimize substation layouts for new and upgraded substations, considering space constraints and construction.
- Review and develop control and protection systems for primary substations.
- Coordinate with civil teams to design and integrate foundations, steel structures, and electrical cable routes.
- Develop equipment specification documents, bill of materials (BOM), and provide procurement support.
- Prepare electrical interconnection diagrams, termination diagrams, cable schedules, and other supporting documentation.
- Perform detailed design and review of auxiliary systems, such as cooling systems and auxiliary power supplies.
- Undertake underground cable design, including cable sizing and routing for HV systems.
- Coordinate with external vendors and contractors to ensure supply and installation meet design specifications.
What We're Looking For
- A Master of Engineering degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate engineering discipline from an accredited college or university.
- A Chartered Engineer (CEng), Professional Engineer (PE) license, or equivalent in the relevant field from a global organization.
- Mandatory experience in HV Plant Design for large EHV Grid Substations.
- Very good communication skills (Oral and Written) in English.
Nice to Have
- 10+ years of overall work experience.
- Prior experience leading large design engineering teams performing Grid Substation design in a global consultancy firm.
- Previous design experience working for Grid Utilities (e.g., National Grid, Transgrid, Transpower, Powergrid).
- Exposure to International standards (IEC, IEEE, ANSI, Australian Standards, Middle East codes).
- Previous design experience with GIS and AIS EHV substation HV Plant Primary design.
