Role Overview
This remote position supports the organization's indirect tax functions, ensuring precision in tax calculations, compliance reporting, and regulatory filings. Working under the Tax and Treasury Manager, the accountant collaborates with internal departments, tax agencies, and outside firms to uphold adherence to state and federal requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Verify correct tax classification and exemption handling for transactions in line with state and local laws; provide responsive support to sales operations.
- Review, renew, and manage customer exemption documentation according to jurisdictional standards.
- Process refund claims submitted by customers and ensure proper documentation.
- Evaluate vendor invoices for tax implications and record use tax accruals accurately.
- Oversee Avalara system configurations to ensure correct sales tax calculations and remittance reporting.
- Prepare and file quarterly and annual estimated income tax payments.
- Respond to inquiries and notices from tax authorities, resolving issues efficiently.
- Maintain a centralized tax compliance calendar and secure login records for tax accounts.
- Support high-volume periods by collecting required records, analyzing filing obligations, and updating tax rate data.
- Assist in registering and de-registering entities across states, including opening and closing tax accounts.
- Assemble return packages for corporate and partnership income tax filings.
- Track fixed asset activity, including purchases, retirements, and tax depreciation schedules.
- Supply audit-ready documentation for both internal and external reviews.
- Partner with cross-functional teams to strengthen asset tracking and reporting processes.
- Prepare supporting schedules and filings for Business Personal Property tax submissions.
Qualifications
Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance and have at least two years of direct corporate tax experience, particularly in sales tax, property tax, and managing multi-state audit processes. Demonstrated ability to manage deadlines, prioritize workloads, and operate in a fast-paced environment is essential.
Strong organizational habits, attention to detail, and time management are required. The role demands independent research into tax regulations for various products and services, along with clear communication across departments.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) is expected. Experience with Avalara and ERP platforms is necessary; NetSuite familiarity is advantageous. A working knowledge of information technology systems is a plus.
