New York, United States of America Hybrid Full-time $139,000-$172,000

Rocky Mountain Institute is hiring a Principal - Carbon-Free Buildings Program (Northeastern U.S.)

About the Role

Lead the charge in transforming how buildings across the Northeast operate by driving decarbonization at scale. This role is central to shaping and executing a vision for carbon-free buildings, combining technical depth with strategic planning to influence real estate owners, developers, financiers, and policymakers. You'll guide project teams, shape high-impact initiatives, and help define the future of sustainable building practices in a rapidly evolving energy landscape.

What You’ll Do

  • Direct technical strategy for a national program focused on eliminating carbon emissions from buildings, with a regional emphasis on the Northeastern U.S.
  • Oversee project teams, set performance goals, and implement strategic plans that align with long-term decarbonization objectives.
  • Build and manage partnerships across the built environment ecosystem—owners, developers, technology providers, and advocates—to accelerate market transformation.
  • Shape and lead funding initiatives through grants, government programs, and consulting engagements, contributing to financial sustainability and program growth.
  • Mentor staff, strengthen team capabilities, and foster a culture of accountability, innovation, and inclusion.
  • Translate high-level strategy into actionable projects, track progress, and adapt approaches as priorities shift.
  • Collaborate with senior leaders to co-develop market-facing strategies and expand the program’s reach and impact.

What We’re Looking For

  • At least 10 years of professional experience in buildings, real estate, building technology, or a related field such as engineering, architecture, or climate-focused innovation.
  • Proven ability to lead teams, develop talent, and manage complex, cross-sector initiatives.
  • Established credibility in sustainability, energy efficiency, or building decarbonization, with recognition as a thought leader.
  • Experience securing funding from philanthropic, public, or fee-based sources, including proposal development and donor engagement.
  • A strong network across the U.S. buildings sector, particularly in the Northeast, with connections to real estate, finance, policy, or technology.
  • Ability to influence decision-makers and align diverse stakeholders around shared climate goals.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity and justice in clean energy transitions.

Preferred Background

  • Advanced degree in engineering, architecture, public policy, real estate, or a related discipline.
  • Professional certifications such as PE, AIA, CEM, LEED, or CPHC.
  • Experience with commercial or multifamily real estate portfolios, sustainable finance, or building electrification technologies.
  • Track record of leading large-scale, interdisciplinary projects or coalitions that shift market norms or policy.
  • Familiarity with equity-centered approaches in program design and team leadership.
  • Direct experience working in or with Northeastern U.S. markets.

Work Environment & Benefits

This position operates in a hybrid model, with flexibility for remote work and regular in-person collaboration in the Northeast. Occasional travel may be required for team gatherings and strategic meetings. You’ll receive a one-time home technology stipend and ongoing commuter support.

Benefits include comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage; retirement plan with immediate vesting; generous paid time off and parental leave; mental health and fertility support; and professional development funding. The organization offers a sabbatical program, voluntary insurance options, and access to a discount marketplace. Team retreats and regional meetups support connection and collaboration.

Compensation includes a salary range of $139,000–$172,000, with an annual bonus target of 20% and eligibility for merit-based increases. The role is structured to support long-term growth and leadership impact.

The organization is committed to equity and inclusion, providing equal opportunities regardless of age, race, disability, gender identity, veteran status, or other protected status. Work is driven by mission, results, and a collaborative, entrepreneurial mindset.
