CareHarmory is hiring an Ophthalmic Assistant to join our ophthalmology team. Under the direct supervision of the Clinical Ophthalmology Manager and Service Director, you will perform preliminary patient workups, diagnostic testing, and related clinical tasks at our Providence, RI and Plainville, MA locations.
What You'll Do
- Perform initial patient screening including documenting chief complaint, history, medications, allergies, and obtaining visual acuity, refraction, and other assessments.
- Perform ophthalmic diagnostic testing as ordered, including perimetry, corneal topography, and photography.
- Set up and assist in medical lasers, refractive lasers, plastics/minor office procedures, Cryo procedures, and injections.
- Know basic ocular anatomy, physiology, diseases/conditions, and pharmacology as defined by JCAHPO standards for COA certification.
- Properly identify and instill diagnostic eye drops per MD standardized order sets.
- Properly handle and transport medication used in the clinics.
- Measure and record vital signs: blood pressure, heart rate, and pulse.
- Maintain adequate medical/ophthalmic supplies in exam and testing rooms.
- Properly clean instruments, equipment, and exam/testing rooms per hospital infection control standards.
- Ensure equipment is in proper working order and notify appropriate personnel of problems.
- Provide cross coverage to other services/locations in the ophthalmology department as needed.
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide services appropriate to patients’ age, mental and physical needs.
- Attend all required annual in-service/trainings.
- Comply with all state, federal, and local regulations and laws governing the performance of this position.
- Adhere to all hospital policies and procedures including HIPPA and patient and employee confidentiality.
- Demonstrate knowledge and compliance with Infection Control/Joint Commission/Department of Public Health (DPH) standards.
- Perform all other duties required to assist in/and or ensure the delivery of complete ophthalmic care and treatment of patients.
What We're Looking For
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- At least one year experience in a supervised setting as an ophthalmic assistant OR completion of a formal JCAHPO approved ophthalmic medical personnel training school/program
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Strong patient/customer service skills
- Ability to receive and comprehend instructions verbally and/or in writing
- Ability to adjust actions in relation to others' actions
- Ability to maintain motivation to achieve goals while dealing with challenges
- Excellent problem solving skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat DC
Nice to Have
- 0-1 year experience in an ophthalmic or health care related setting
Team & Environment
You will report directly to the Clinical Ophthalmology Manager and Service Director.
