Mortenson is seeking an Engineer III or IV to support our energy storage and renewable projects. In this role, you will support detailed engineering design packages and provide construction support for utility-scale energy storage, medium voltage distribution, and renewable projects through 500kV. You will collaborate closely with Engineering Project Managers, Design Phase Managers, Project Managers, and customers to deliver high-quality engineering solutions.
What You'll Do
- Work with the largest utility-scale substation and/or energy storage customers in the United States to integrate the next generation of storage and renewable generation assets.
- Design utility-scale substation physical layouts and energy storage systems using the latest available technology.
- Develop innovative designs to optimize overall cost and performance.
- Interface and present to multiple stakeholders, including customer decision-makers and project teams.
- Provide technical support to personnel and cross-functional teams for proposals, estimating, detailed engineering, procurement, and construction.
- Coordinate with other engineering disciplines, Project Managers, and Design Phase Managers to successfully deliver design projects.
- Participate in project teams executing design, analysis, or evaluation of assigned projects using sound engineering principles.
- Begin performing lead engineer tasks on 1-3 large design projects.
- Mentor and guide other Engineering Professionals.
- Perform technical review, approval, and selection of equipment vendor quotes on major equipment.
- Collect and evaluate data to recommend courses of action.
- Assure proper documentation of technical data generated for assigned projects consistent with engineering policies and Mortenson QA/QC procedures.
- Perform data analysis, engineering tasks, calculations, and studies to develop preliminary and detailed designs for large and small projects.
- Develop technical specifications, provide direction to drafters and designers, and direct the flow of drafting duties to meet design schedules.
- Handle multiple projects and provide detailed design packages that comply with applicable engineering standards and safety codes.
- Plan and conduct work requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, and adaptation or modification of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.
- Review engineering work to produce a first-time review rate of documents at 80% correct.
- Understand and apply the equation S=P+jQ.
- Verify that construction agrees with civil and protection engineering design drawings, including preparatory meetings and QA/QC.
- Develop and evaluate technical requirements for fabrication and construction tender packages.
- Create detailed designs aligned with customer requirements and Mortenson’s best practice standards.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or related Engineering program.
- Ability to travel up to 30%.
- For Engineer III: 4+ years of related experience.
- For Engineer III: Professional Engineering (PE) certification.
- For Engineer IV: 7+ years of related experience.
- For Engineer IV: Professional Engineering (PE) certification.
Nice to Have
- Degree from a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum.
- Working knowledge of or familiarity with Engineering software packages and Project Controls software like Procore.
- Acquired knowledge in system integration, product adaptation, and design development for systems.
- Work experience with an electrical background or acquired industry knowledge from time in the electrical business or electrician/construction.
- Knowledge focused on power systems, substations, inverters, and/or DC batteries/solutions.
- Design optimization skills that involve technical parameters but take into account economic feedback for decisions.
- Working knowledge of or familiarity with software packages: CYMCAP, CDEGS, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, etc.
- Microsoft Excel experience to track and analyze different components and combinations.
- Experience in the T&D industry; design experience in the Energy Storage, Solar, or Wind industry is preferred.

Benefits & Compensation
- Compensation range: $98,800 – $167,100. The actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL – 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR – 10%, Washington, D.C. – 12.5%.
Work Mode
This is a local-city position. You will work from office locations in Minneapolis, MN; Denver, CO; Fargo, ND; or San Antonio, TX.
