The Blockchain & Climate Institute (BCI America Inc.) is looking for an UNPAID VOLUNTEER - General Counsel to lead our Legal Advisory and Governance Section. As a volunteers-led think tank advocating for blockchain technology in climate action, we need expert legal guidance to support our mission. You will provide strategic legal advice to the Director-General and all BCI divisions, managing legal risk across our operations.
What You'll Do
- Manage the Legal Advisory Section and supervise a team of legal advisors.
- Provide expert, strategic legal advice on obligations and operations, including employment, contract, privacy, and competition law.
- Evaluate multiple inputs and impacts for decisions and courses of action.
- Support the formulation and review of internal governance policies and manage external factor impacts.
- Draft legal opinions, memoranda, and briefing documents.
- Formulate formalities regarding the settlement of disputes.
- Monitor the implementation of legal clauses.
- Advise members on legal issues and risks, including corporate and charity governance, fundraising, marketing, competition, data protection, trademarks, copyright, defamation, and litigation.
What We're Looking For
- LLB or GDL formal/professional education.
- Qualified solicitor/barrister in the UK with a minimum of 10 years’ post-qualification experience in private practice or in-house.
- Proven general counsel experience in a not-for-profit environment.
- Broad legal knowledge in corporate law, contract law, employment law, or litigations.
- In-depth understanding of how legal issues affect organizations.
- Ability to develop legal strategy and objectives.
- Experience building constructive relationships with stakeholders.
- Experience working independently and with teams to drive forward blockchain-related projects using your own initiative.
- Excellent English writing skills.
- Excellent use of the Microsoft Office 365 suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Nice to Have
- At least some in-house experience.
- Some knowledge of topics central to BCI, such as climate change, climate finance, and blockchain technology.

You will lead the Legal Advisory and Governance Section, comprising senior and junior legal advisors, as part of the Director-General’s Office, reporting directly to the Director-General.
