The University of Vienna's Institute of English and American Studies seeks a University Assistant (Pre-doc) in Applied English Linguistics. This role offers an opportunity to integrate into a dynamic research environment, contributing to teaching and administration while completing your doctoral dissertation.
What You'll Do
- Participate actively in research, teaching, and administrative tasks within applied English linguistics.
- Contribute to the development and execution of research projects and scientific studies.
- Support publications, scientific articles, and academic presentations.
- Complete a dissertation agreement within 12 months.
- Conduct and contribute to teaching activities as per the collective agreement.
- Provide supervision and support for students.
- Assist in organizing conferences, congresses, and symposia.
- Contribute to institute, teaching, and research administration.
What We're Looking For
- A completed Magister, MEd, or MA degree in English Studies, English Linguistics, or a closely related field, with a focus on sociolinguistics or linguistic anthropology.
- High-level written and oral communication skills.
- Very good English language skills in speech and writing.
- Basic computer user skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team.
Nice to Have
- Good knowledge and solid understanding of applied English linguistics.
- Experience with or willingness to learn applied linguistic research methods.
- Willingness to conceive and carry out a dissertation project on the social role and function of language in Anglophone, global, multilingual, or digital cultures, considering digital infrastructures or material practices.
- Prior teaching experience.
- Experience with online and digitally supported learning environments.
- Knowledge of university processes and structures.

You will join the Institute of English and American Studies within the Faculty of Philological and Cultural Studies, as part of a team led by Univ.-Prof. Dr. Britta Schneider. The institute comprises more than 80 scientific staff, providing a collaborative and international research climate.
