State of Arizona, Department of Transportation is hiring a Transportation Construction Technician

About the Role

The State of Arizona is seeking a Transportation Construction Technician to serve as a lead technician on highway construction projects. You will perform highly technical inspection, materials quality control, and construction administration activities, acting as a primary contact for contractors and resolving field issues.

What You'll Do

  • Review construction plans, specifications, and documentation to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Analyze technical problems and develop procedures and recommendations for resolution.
  • Verify and approve calculations, test results, and contractor pay quantities.
  • Prepare and review contract documents and project-related documentation.
  • Perform inspection, documentation, and testing for construction projects.
  • Provide training, coaching, and guidance to other employees.
  • Consult with contractors, local agencies, and citizens to resolve issues at the field level.
  • Prepare recommendations for project management and review completed work of others.
  • May initiate change orders or force accounts.

What We're Looking For

  • Two years of journey-level experience as a senior technician, survey party chief, or in inspecting highway construction, hot mix/concrete plants, or related administrative/engineering records.
  • Valid Arizona Driver's License and ability to safely drive a full-size pickup truck on- and off-road.
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods exposed to heat, cold, dust, noise, and high-speed traffic.
  • Ability to ensure safe, timely, and compliant completion of all work to agency standards.
  • Knowledge of civil engineering principles related to state highway construction, inspection methods, materials testing, and contract documentation.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and agency standards, policies, and record-keeping procedures.
  • Knowledge of materials and equipment used for highway construction.
  • Skill in data analysis, written and verbal communication in fluent English, and equipment operation.
  • Employment is contingent upon passing a physical examination.
  • All new hires must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).

Team & Environment

You will work under the general supervision of a resident engineer, project supervisor, or lab supervisor.

  • Salary Range: $57,315.97 - $67,315.97
  • Sick leave and vacation with 10 paid holidays per year.
