PG&E is hiring a Supervisor, System Protection to oversee the protection systems installed and owned by the company. In this role, you will manage the teams that specify, design, and apply protective relay packages for the reliable and secure operation of our distribution systems, while providing system support for interfacing departments.
What You'll Do
- Act as a technical lead, reviewing diagrams, relay settings, and protection requirements prior to implementation, advising on microprocessor device programming, and analyzing events to write reports.
- Coach, develop, and lead the System Protection Engineering team to achieve department goals and individual development objectives.
- Contribute to group financial performance by monitoring budgets, controlling costs, reviewing time sheets, and approving expenses.
- Coordinate with engineers to manage workload and accomplish specific performance objectives for system availability, project completion, special assignments, and new technologies.
- Enforce procedures and documentation processes to ensure compliance with regulatory standards (CAISO, WECC, NERC, FERC) and interact effectively with external entities.
- Ensure the team can support fault location activities by retrieving relay data, using fault studies, and collaborating with operations and maintenance personnel.
- Ensure the protection engineering team has the resources and tools to support customer outage restoration 24/7 with an emphasis on expedited restoration.
- Ensure quality is a priority, human performance errors are identified, lessons learned are disseminated, and standards and guidelines are followed.
- Manage and execute relay upgrade and replacement capital projects.
- May develop standards (schematics including equipment selection and required inputs and outputs) for System Protection.
- May provide customer support for interconnection customers such as generation or large-scale distribution.
- Participate in the clearance process of equipment to be isolated, ensuring adequate protection.
- Supervise 7-14 direct reports including engineers and support staff.
- Support Operations, Substation Engineering, Test Department, and Electric Technicians.
- Support the identification of work to create a sustainable, highly reliable protection and control system by providing input on the five-year plan and work prioritization.
- Lead the System Protection Public Safety Power Shutoff technical team.
- Supervise Protection Engineers working on the technical requirements for Islanding protection schemes.
- Work closely with the PG&E Investigation Team and PG&E legal team in preparing responses for data requests related to wildfires.
- Provide responses to the PG&E Data Response Unit, review reports from the PG&E legal team for accuracy, and help provide responses to CPUC and Cal Fire investigators.
What We're Looking For
- A Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering with an emphasis in System Protection or specific to the field of electrical power.
- 7+ years of protection engineering experience.
Team & Environment
You will lead a team of 7-14 direct reports including engineers and support staff.
Benefits & Compensation
- Minimum Base Salary (Bay Area): $163,000.00
- Mid Base Salary (Bay Area): $220,000.00
- Maximum Base Salary (Bay Area): $277,000.00
- Minimum Base Salary (California): $155,000.00
- Mid Base Salary (California): $209,000.00
- Maximum Base Salary (California): $263,000.00

This is a hybrid position based in one of the following California locations: West Sacramento, Fresno, or San Ramon.
