International Rescue Committee (IRC) is hiring a Summer 2026: Development & Communications Intern (Unpaid)

About the Role

This internship offers a meaningful opportunity to contribute to nonprofit development and communications within a humanitarian setting. As a Development & Communications Intern, you will play an active role in advancing outreach and fundraising initiatives for a respected organization serving refugee and asylum-seeking populations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in organizing fundraising events by contributing to social media strategies, outreach efforts, sponsorship research, and ticketing operations
  • Develop outreach strategies to connect with community organizations, universities, and potential partners
  • Maintain and update organizational webpages and social media platforms to ensure timely, accurate content
  • Support storytelling initiatives by collecting narratives and transcribing client interviews for public-facing content
  • Help secure in-kind donations to directly support client needs
  • Provide administrative support including data management, donor acknowledgments, and coordination tasks
  • Attend regular team and staff meetings to stay aligned with organizational goals

Qualifications

Applicants should currently be enrolled in a degree program or have graduated within the past year. Strong command of written and spoken English is required, along with fluency in Microsoft Office applications. Ideal candidates are detail-focused, capable of managing multiple priorities, and skilled in communication. The ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment is essential.

Preference will be given to those studying communications, marketing, event planning, or related fields. Experience with Canva, graphic design, social media management, or marketing is considered an advantage.

Technology & Work Environment

The role uses tools including Microsoft Office, Canva, social media networks, and web content systems. Work is conducted in a hybrid format, with options for remote and in-person engagement based in San Diego. Interns must provide their own workspace, computer, and internet access. Scheduling is flexible within weekday business hours (8:30am–5:00pm PST).
