The New York Times is hiring a Stories Engineering Manager to lead the Stories team within the News Product group. You will own the technical strategy for our core digital journalism surfaces—including Articles, Live Blogs, Newsletters, and Visual Formats—and guide work to sustain and grow these products for a global newsroom and millions of readers.
What You'll Do
- Create a high-performance engineering culture that can solve challenging technical problems, make effective tradeoffs and consistently deliver.
- Partner with engineers and Product, Design and Data counterparts to develop clear technical execution plans and milestones.
- Drive technical excellence, ensuring our systems are reliable, efficient, and secure and working well for the newsroom, readers, and business.
- Coach and mentor a team, supporting their growth and technical development.
- Cultivate a collaborative environment that emphasizes continuous learning and growth.
- Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
What We're Looking For
- 1+ years of engineering team leadership experience
- Experience managing production operations for high-availability systems
- Demonstrated history of developing a high-performance team and growing its skills over time
- Demonstrated history partnering with Product, Design, and Data to drive great solutions
- Fluency in JavaScript applications, cloud deployments, observability, monitoring and alerting
Nice to Have
- Experience managing complex frontends or systems that handle rapid traffic surges
- Direct experience with digital journalism, CMS systems, and/or ProseMirror

You will lead the Stories team within the News Product group and report to the Senior Director of News Product Web Engineering. You will also partner closely with the Stories Senior Engineering Manager.
