Black & Veatch is hiring a Staff Substation Structural Engineer to lead structural design engineering and analysis on substation scopes. You will function as a technical specialist and/or in a lead role, applying advanced engineering techniques and analyses with minimal supervision as part of our Technology, Commercial & Industrial team within the Power sector.
What You'll Do
- Lead structural design engineering and analysis on substation scopes.
- Collect and assimilate data for engineering work, performing research and preparing calculations in accordance with company and industry standards.
- Develop recommendations for equipment and materials while working successfully within budget, schedule, and quality requirements.
- Execute structural analysis, perform calculations, and prepare sketches and drawings for the design of supporting structures and foundations.
- Lead the structural efforts on Engineering Services and EPC substation projects.
- Generate project-specific specifications and assist with the procurement process.
- Supervise structural engineers and work with structural technicians in the preparation of drawings and specifications, serving as the responsible charge for projects.
- Perform construction phase engineering duties such as site visits, responding to RFI’s, and reviewing contractor submittals.
- Perform project administrative tasks, including preparing design fee estimates, monitoring progress, managing changes, and implementing quality control requirements.
- Coordinate work with other discipline engineers and provide guidance on department design guides, standards, and policies.
- Implement resource management strategy for a small group.
- Maintain positive client relations through effective communication and may assist with business development activities.
What We're Looking For
- A bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited program.
- A minimum of 5 years of related work experience.
- Ability to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements, which may include background checks, drug screens, and motor vehicle records searches.
Nice to Have
- An active PE License.
- Intermediate knowledge of Structural Engineering design principles, guides, and standards.
- Basic structural steel and concrete experience using 3D analysis and design software such as RISA 3D or STAAD Pro.
- Basic foundation design experience using software like LPile, RISA Foundation, or SP-Mats.
- Experience performing structural connection calculations using MS Excel and/or Mathcad.
- Experience with the design of utility-scale electrical substations, energy, or renewables.
- Structural design of electrical substation steel structures and their foundations.
- Skills in Written Communications, Drive for Results, Priority Setting, Planning, Delegation, Directing Others, Conflict Management, Informing, Listening, Dealing with Ambiguity, and Building Effective Teams.
