Black & Veatch, an employee-owned engineering leader, is seeking a Staff Substation Structural Engineer. In this role, you will function as a technical specialist and/or project lead, applying advanced engineering techniques to lead structural design and analysis for substation scopes, specifically for data center clients on EPC projects.
What You'll Do
- Lead structural design engineering and analysis on substation scopes for data center clients on EPC projects.
- Collect and assimilate data, perform research, and prepare calculations in accordance with industry standards.
- Develop recommendations for equipment and materials while managing budget, schedule, and quality requirements.
- Function as a technical specialist, applying advanced engineering techniques and analyses with minimal supervision.
- Prepare a variety of complex engineering deliverables for larger or multiple projects.
- Manage assigned budget, schedule, and quality requirements, delegating tasks and reviewing lower-level work.
- Actively coordinate with all other internal and external team members on moderately complex projects.
- Assist with business development activities and identify key client interests and drivers.
- Provide mentoring, guidance, and knowledge management support to lower-level professionals.
What We're Looking For
- Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited program or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 5 years related work experience.
- Ability to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (background check, drug screen, MVR search).
- Active engineering registration or licensure to support engineer of record (EOR) requirements.
Nice to Have
- Active PE License.
- Demonstrated skills in Written Communications, Drive For Results, Priority Setting, Planning, Delegation, and Building Effective Teams.
- Advanced knowledge of engineering design principles, design guides, and standards.
- Previous client interaction experience with solid relationship-building abilities.
- Proven strong written and verbal communications skills.
- Experience using 3D structural analysis and design software (i.e., RISA-3D, STAAD) for steel and concrete design.
- Experience with the design of utility-scale electrical substation and transmission systems.
- Structural design of electrical substation structures and foundations.
- Previous EPC project experience or structural design in a fast-paced environment.
