Standard Bots is looking for a Staff Functional Safety Engineer to lead all aspects of the functional safety lifecycle for our robotic products. You will drive cross-functional coordination to deliver certifiable, production-ready robots with demonstrable safety evidence in our fast-paced startup environment.
What You'll Do
- Own and run the Functional Safety Management (FSM) system to ensure compliance with relevant standards.
- Lead hazard identification and risk assessments (HAZOP, FMEA / HARA), maintaining a live HARA covering all lifecycle phases.
- Define, approve, and document Safety-Related Control System (SRCS) architectures and demonstrate target Performance Levels.
- Execute reliability analysis and FMEDA using tools such as SISTEMA or Pascal.
- Manage Verification & Validation (V&V), authoring and running comprehensive V&V plans including fault-injection and safety validation.
- Collaborate on the safety software lifecycle, ensuring work follows IEC 61508-3 best practices and coaching developers.
- Lead interdisciplinary teams to integrate safety requirements into design, prototype, and production.
- Manage external certification execution, acting as primary technical interface with certification bodies.
- Drive competency & culture, building the functional safety competency matrix and defining responsibilities.
- Manage documentation & traceability, maintaining rigorous configuration management and requirements traceability.
- Facilitate manufacturability and production readiness for safety systems with manufacturing and supply chain.
- Manage the safety program budget and schedule and relationships with external consultants and vendors.
What We're Looking For
- BS in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics, Systems Engineering, or equivalent.
- 7+ years of hands-on experience in functional safety engineering for complex electromechanical systems.
- Demonstrable experience leading safety activities from concept through certification.
- Deep familiarity with machinery and functional safety standards (ISO 13849-1/2, ISO 12100, ISO 10218-1, IEC 61508, IEC 62061, IEC 61496).
- Proven track record delivering products through formal certification with NRTLs (Intertek, TÜV, UL).
