Manulife Financial Corporation is seeking a Senior Underwriting Consultant to evaluate applications of the highest financial impact and complexity. You will analyze decisions while upholding underwriting policies, work independently, and guide more junior colleagues.
What You'll Do
- Identify and provide solutions to work-related problems and issues.
- Negotiate and manage time and resources to meet deadlines and service times.
- Provide training and act as an information resource for more junior underwriters.
- Process all aspects of auditing, formal appeal reviews, and contestable claim review.
- Audit applications to ensure underwriting decisions and processing follow established guidelines.
- Audit medical record summaries to ensure documentation meets guidelines.
- Assist management with research projects pertaining to risk assessment.
- Process formal underwriting appeals and complaints.
- Review underwriting fraud referrals for appropriateness and assist with book of business reviews.
- Review contestable claims for potential misrepresentation during underwriting.
- Manage all aspects of the underwriting process for the most complex cases.
- Serve as a subject matter expert for junior colleagues and management.
- Assist management with staff training and consultations.
What We're Looking For
- College graduate or business equivalent.
- Strong knowledge of the underwriting function and John Hancock's various businesses.
- Strong knowledge of referral areas.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to define, research, and resolve problems.
- Excellent ability to create and maintain customer relationships.
- Ability to prioritize and work effectively under deadlines.
- Strong ability to comprehend, retain, and apply current technical information to daily work.
- Strong knowledge of company plans, riders, benefits, and illustrations.
- Strong knowledge of medical science, technology, and terminology and their impact on morbidity.
Nice to Have
- Preferably 7 or more years of underwriting experience or exposure.
