OpenFX is seeking a Senior Technical Writer to build and own the API documentation ecosystem from the ground up, translating complex financial engineering into clear, accessible developer experiences. This foundational role involves designing information architecture, defining content standards, and directly influencing how global financial institutions integrate with OpenFX's cross-border payment infrastructure.
What You'll Do
- Architect the Information Architecture and own the words, designing a scalable taxonomy from Quickstart guides to complex Treasury Operations references
- Own the build-out of the API doc platform, selecting the tech stack and implementing tooling that enables engineers to contribute documentation efficiently while maintaining quality
- Translate internal engineering logic into external developer understanding by defining 'Mental Models' and writing definitive guides on concepts like idempotency, asynchronous webhooks, and multi-currency settlement states
- Implement and enforce a 'Design First' or strictly governed 'Code First' OpenAPI/Swagger workflow where specs are treated as a product contract
- Ensure automated reference generation from OpenAPI workflows is accurate, typed, and complete
- Sit in Product, Engineering, and Design reviews as the 'First User' to provide feedback on API usability
- Push back on engineering to improve parameter naming and consistency before code reaches production
- Create feedback loops between customer integration challenges and documentation improvements
- Launch a public API developer portal (References + Guides + Changelog) that is live, searchable, and accurate
- Expand documentation coverage so that 100% of public endpoints have accurate request/response examples in at least three languages
- Reduce 'Instructional' support tickets (questions asking 'how do I do X?') by 40%
- Partner with Product and Engineering to drive 'Time to First API Call' down to under 15 minutes
- Own the creation of Quickstart guides, code snippets, and onboarding tutorials that enable fast integration
What We're Looking For
- 5+ Years in API Documentation, specifically documenting REST APIs for B2B or infrastructure products
- Ability to point to public docs previously architected
- Treat documentation as software (Docs-as-Code Native)
- Fluent in Markdown, Git, and CI/CD workflows
- Do not use CMS copy-paste; commit documentation to a repo
- Engineering Fluency: able to read code to extract logic independently
- Understand distributed system concepts such as Latency, Rate Limiting, and Eventual Consistency
- Demonstrate a 'Teacher' Mindset by simplifying complex non-linear concepts into linear guides
- Portfolio shows focus on explaining 'Why' a developer uses an endpoint, not just 'What' it does
- High ownership and autonomy: comfortable building documentation systems from scratch, establishing processes, and making architectural decisions
- Financial services or Fintech Context: know the difference between 'Authorized' and 'Settled'
- Prior experience documenting payments, trading, or banking APIs
Nice to Have
- Experience implementing interactive code playgrounds or 'Try it now' buttons within documentation
- Multimedia documentation skills: creating video tutorials, interactive demos, architecture diagrams, sequence diagrams, or other visual learning materials
- Understanding of AI-assisted development workflows and how to optimize documentation for LLM consumption alongside human readers
Technical Stack
- Markdown
- Git
- CI/CD workflows
- OpenAPI/Swagger
- API documentation platforms (selection and implementation owned by candidate)
Team & Environment
- founding member; will scale into a team
- Cross-functional collaboration with Product, Engineering, and Design teams
Benefits & Compensation
- Founding Member: define hiring standards, voice, and culture of the documentation team as it scales
- Greenfield Architecture: build the documentation system from scratch without legacy debt
- Learn the inner workings of global finance including FX liquidity, settlement, and treasury operations
- Apply financial knowledge to both new payment stacks and legacy rails
- Shape the industry narrative by teaching developers how to think about the future of money
- Define the vocabulary of the industry through documentation
- Join a team of ex-Stripe, J.P. Morgan, and Kraken engineers
- Backed by Accel and Lightspeed
- Documentation valued as a core part of the product
