Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the world's most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World's Most Experienced Driver—applying AI to make it safe and easy for people and things to get around with autonomous vehicles. We're making it possible for riders to get around safely, without needing to pay attention to the road, and for goods to be delivered autonomously. We're starting with Waymo One, our fully autonomous ride-hailing service, and are expanding into trucking with Waymo Via.
About the role:
We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our Perception team. The Perception team is responsible for building systems that allow the Waymo Driver to understand its surroundings. This includes detecting and tracking objects such as vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, and traffic lights, as well as understanding the 3D geometry of the environment.
You will work closely with researchers, engineers, and product managers to develop and deploy state-of-the-art perception systems. You will be responsible for designing, implementing, and testing software that runs on our vehicles in real-time. You will also work on improving the accuracy and robustness of our perception systems through data analysis, algorithm development, and system optimization.
Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and maintain software for perception systems
- Work with large-scale real-world data to improve the performance of perception models
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate perception systems into the broader autonomous driving stack
- Optimize perception algorithms for real-time performance and reliability
- Conduct code reviews and contribute to engineering best practices
Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
- 5 years of software engineering experience
- Proficiency in C++ and Python
- Experience with machine learning and computer vision
- Experience with large-scale software systems
Preferred qualifications:
- Master's or PhD in Computer Science, Robotics, or a related field
- Experience with deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch
- Experience with autonomous systems or robotics
- Experience with sensor fusion (LiDAR, camera, radar)
- Experience with real-time systems and embedded software
