Avalara is hiring a Senior Product Manager

About the Role

Avalara is hiring a Senior Product Manager to lead the next generation of embedded finance capabilities, specifically in payments and lending/embedded credit. This senior individual contributor role owns a product area from strategy through delivery and adoption, partnering with Engineering, Design, Data, GTM, and external financial partners.

What You'll Do

  • Develop the strategy for financial products within Avalara's ecosystem, tied to company and business-unit goals.
  • Define and maintain a clear roadmap for your product area.
  • Translate strategy into measurable outcomes, success metrics, and north-star goals.
  • Understand customer segments (accounting firms, merchants, platforms, marketplaces), their money movement workflows, and where embedded finance and tax intersect.
  • Lead structured discovery using interviews, journey mapping, data analysis, and experiments to validate problems and solutions.
  • Write clear PRDs and artifacts that balance customer value, regulatory and risk requirements, technical feasibility, and usability.
  • Partner with Engineering and Design to discover solutions, break work into well-defined increments, and ship iterative, high-quality releases.
  • Use analytics, experimentation, and cohort analysis to understand performance and improve conversion, adoption, and economics.
  • Use AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, v0, Figma Make, Cursor) to accelerate research, summarize insights, and explore solution space.
  • Be the product owner for your domain—driving clarity of goals, scope, trade-offs, and timelines for partners.
  • Promote Sales, Customer Success, Marketing, and Support with positioning, collateral inputs, demos, and training; gather feedback to inform roadmap.
  • Represent the Embedded Finance roadmap and results to senior leadership in a concise, data-backed way.

What We're Looking For

  • 6+ years of product management experience building and scaling software products.
  • 4+ years in FinTech/payments, specifically in areas such as acquiring, card issuing, payment gateways, ACH/wires, payouts, or similar.
  • Hands-on experience with embedded finance or BaaS products, in B2B SaaS, platforms, or marketplaces.
  • Familiarity with lending / credit products (e.g., vendor financing, working capital, invoice financing, card-based credit, or underwriting platforms).
  • Technical fluency: you can work with APIs, webhooks, event-driven systems, and understand how ledgers, reconciliation, and risk systems fit together.
  • Experience building a roadmap, prioritizing ruthlessly, and shipping products that improved important business and customer metrics.
  • Experience navigating ambiguous problem spaces, aligning diverse partners, and making clear, principled trade-offs.
  • Comfort using AI tools in your workflow for analysis, synthesis, documentation, and brainstorming—paired with a sense for when human judgment must lead.
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Computer Science, Engineering, Business, Economics, or similar) or equivalent practical experience.

Nice to Have

  • Experience working with tax, accounting, ERP, or billing systems and integrating payments or financing into those workflows.
  • Prior work with global payments and cross-border money movement.
  • Experience in either a high-growth SaaS or platform environment where you've built 0→1 and scaled 1→n products.

Technical Stack

  • APIs, webhooks, event-driven systems
  • AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, v0, Figma Make, Cursor)
