About the Role

RK&K is looking for a Senior Inspector to lead and strengthen our construction engineering and inspection business across the Hampton Roads, Virginia area. You will be a key player on projects involving highways, bridges, and design-build work, primarily within VDOT’s Hampton Roads District and surrounding localities.

What You'll Do

  • Provide construction management support, inspecting and monitoring roadway and structure construction for compliance with plans, specifications, and safety regulations.
  • Independently coordinate and direct all phases of construction inspection on complex projects, managing significant traffic control, public sensitivity, environmental challenges, and coordination with stakeholders.
  • Lead and monitor the work products of a team of junior level inspectors, providing technical supervision and guidance.
  • Lead and conduct project meetings with various stakeholders, interfacing with clients, state and federal agencies, and other engineering disciplines.
  • Solve complex field problems by providing technical evaluations and sound solutions.
  • Monitor and document contractor activities, communicating and documenting non-compliant work elements.
  • Review lines, grades, dimensions, and elevations using standard survey and field engineering equipment.
  • Review material placement, track materials testing frequencies, and perform materials testing as required.
  • Perform field measurements and track daily quantities of installed work items.
  • Maintain comprehensive project records, including daily reports, materials compliance tracking, pay quantity records, as-built plans, EEO documents, change orders, and monthly payment vouchers.
  • Aid Construction Management staff with project schedule monitoring, budget tracking, and the development of change order and NOI analysis.

What We're Looking For

  • Minimum of seven (7) years of relevant experience in construction inspection, materials, standards, and specifications related to state highway projects and facilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to compute basic mathematic formulas, including algebra and geometry.
  • Functional use of computer software, including the Microsoft suite and other construction documentation software.
  • Experience overseeing junior level staff work products to ensure project requirements are achieved.
  • Capable of working independently on small construction projects.
  • Acceptable driving record.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • VDOT Required Material Certifications (or ability to obtain within 6 months): VDOT Soil and Aggregate Compaction - NICET LEVEL II, VDOT Asphalt Field Level I & II, ACI Concrete Field Level I, or WACEL Concrete I, or NICET LEVEL II, VDOT Pavement Marking, VDOT Slurry Surfacing, VDOT Surface Treatment, VDOT Flagger Certification, VDOT GRIT (Guardrail Certification), VA DEQ - Certification for Erosion and Sediment Control Inspection, VA DEQ - Stormwater Management (Inspector) Certification, Nuclear Gauge Safety Training, ATTSA Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control, 10 Hour OSHA Safety Training - OSHA.

Nice to Have

  • Construction inspection experience with roadway, asphalt, concrete, pavement markings, structure, and bridge construction methods.
  • VDOT and other local public agency experience.
  • Experience with construction document management software such as PlanGrid, AWP, and SharePoint.
  • Associate or bachelor's degree in engineering or a similar field of study.
  • Certified Construction Manager (CCM) or Certified Construction Manager in Training (CMIT) certificate.

Work Mode

This is a local role based in the Hampton Roads, VA area. Project work will be performed in VDOT’s Hampton Roads District, adjacent Districts, and localities including Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Williamsburg, Emporia, and Suffolk.
