Senior Government Underwriter
This role is responsible for evaluating mortgage loan files to ensure compliance with government-backed program requirements, including FHA and VA. The underwriter applies a thorough understanding of credit policies and agency handbooks to assess borrower repayment capacity, collateral quality, and overall loan integrity.
Key Responsibilities
- Review loan documentation to verify credit, income, assets, and property details in alignment with agency and internal standards
- Apply automated underwriting system findings and issue appropriate conditions to resolve risk factors
- Issue clear approvals by satisfying all underwriting conditions and delivering final credit decisions
- Collaborate with loan officers and operations teams to support a smooth borrower experience
- Address post-closing quality findings and support resolution of audit-related issues
- Maintain consistent productivity and accuracy while meeting turnaround expectations
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent; advanced education a plus
- Minimum of five years of mortgage underwriting experience, with direct work in government programs
- Proven ability to manually underwrite to FHA and VA guidelines
- Familiarity with automated underwriting systems and at least one government underwriting certification
- Strong proficiency in Excel, Word, Outlook, and multiple loan origination systems
- Demonstrated skill in time management, critical thinking, and attention to detail
- Clear and effective communication with cross-functional teams and stakeholders
- Consistent track record of meeting or exceeding performance goals in quality, volume, and efficiency
Work Environment
