Gusto is looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to provide seasoned leadership for our product development teams. You will focus on supporting our existing core payroll products while advancing the incorporation of AI throughout our product portfolio and software development lifecycle. What You'll Do
- Align teams to focus on new AI-native features and business goals.
- Take complete functional ownership of your area, including vision for platform and product in partnership with product managers and stakeholders.
- Initiate innovation by providing initial inspiration to get your team started on new ideas and actions.
- Elevate engineering practices to be AI-native, guiding adoption of tools, processes, and methodologies that leverage AI to increase velocity, code quality, and operational efficiency.
- Align and prioritize organization deliverables based on company needs, working closely with leadership across functional departments.
- Ensure products and services are performant, available 24x7x365, resilient, and stable.
- Lead transformation of shared services groups like DevOps and QA to actively support engineers and become strategic partners for sustainable operations and improvement.
- Evaluate emerging technologies including SaaS systems for opportunities to improve services, acting as a technical consultant to champion applicable solutions.
- Work with engineering leaders across the company to design clear sub-systems and improve platform architecture used by the entire company.
What We're Looking For
- A Master's or Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent experience.
- 10+ years of engineering leadership experience managing both people and tech stacks.
- Proven ability to lead organizational changes, focusing on DevOps and QA, transforming these functions from cost centers into essential parts of strategic engineering.
- Prior experience or exposure in AI-native product development leveraging AWS services.
- Proven track record of communicating with cross-functional peers: articulating technical concepts to business stakeholders and business objectives to technical teams.
- Demonstrated ability to take ownership of problems and projects and lead them to completion.
- Proven ability to debug and triage critical systems, including team performance.
- Hands-on experience with agile methodologies and their functional application.
- Strong experience with web application development, DevOps, distributed systems, CI/CD, and quality test automation.
- Solid knowledge of Object-Oriented Design, Service Oriented Architecture, and Systems thinking.
- Excellent verbal and written presentation skills, including the ability to prepare materials for audiences at all organizational levels.

Benefits & Compensation
- Compensation range: $189,000 to $237,000 per year in Scottsdale and most major metro locations.

This is a hybrid position based in Denver, San Francisco, New York City, or Scottsdale.
