The Reading Specialist will serve Weaver Elementary and Deep Creek Elementary, delivering specialized literacy support for students who are not meeting established benchmarks. This position plays a key role in identifying reading challenges through diagnostic assessments and developing individualized reading plans to guide targeted instruction.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct literacy assessments and interpret results to inform instructional decisions in accordance with Virginia Department of Education guidelines.
- Design and oversee supplemental reading interventions based on student data and individual learning needs.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers to strengthen core literacy instruction and support data-driven planning.
- Model research-based reading strategies aligned with scientifically proven methods and current state standards.
- Track and report student progress through regular monitoring and documentation for both school division and state requirements.
- Lead professional development by sharing effective practices and strategies with teaching staff.
- Organize reading motivation initiatives and assist in delivering parent-focused programs on literacy development.
- Support the selection and distribution of instructional and intervention materials.
- Attend district and state-level trainings and share relevant updates with school staff.
Qualifications
Candidates must hold or be eligible for a Virginia teaching license with a Reading Specialist endorsement. Demonstrated expertise in instructional design, assessment, and data analysis is essential. Strong communication and collaboration skills are required to work effectively with teachers, administrators, and families.
Applicants must pass all required background checks, including FBI and State Police criminal history reviews, Child Protective Services screening, and tuberculosis testing.
Work Environment
This is an onsite, half-time position with a schedule of eight hours per day across 200 school days annually, split between two elementary school locations. The role requires consistent use of standard educational and office technology.
