The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is hiring a Program Staff Attorney to join our Office of Legal Affairs (OLA) division. This role serves as a generalist subject matter expert providing legal guidance, policy development, and advocacy for specific agency projects and public interest initiatives. We are seeking an attorney with a strong commitment to public service, civil rights, and education.
What You'll Do
- Perform various legal tasks at the direction of the Chief Legal and Civil Rights Officer.
- Conduct in-depth legal research on statutes, regulations, and case law to advise agency programs on equity, civil rights, investigations, public records, and administrative law.
- Prepare memoranda, present case summaries, and make actionable recommendations.
- Draft and analyze proposed legislation and assist with drafting regulations for new or changing programs.
- Respond to requests for legal interpretation of statutes, regulations, and case law.
- Provide legal advice to staff, support projects and compliance efforts, and review administrative and enforcement actions.
- Collaborate with the Office of the Attorney General and support litigation as directed.
- Deliver dependable, proactive, and timely legal guidance for non-personnel matters.
What We're Looking For
- A licensed attorney with a demonstrated commitment to K-12 public education, civil rights, and public service.
- Experience conducting comprehensive legal research and analysis.
- Ability to draft clear legal memoranda, opinions, and regulatory language.
- Skill in interpreting statutes, regulations, and case law to provide actionable advice.
- Proven capacity to manage multiple tasks flexibly and meet deadlines.
- Strong collaboration skills and experience working with internal and external legal counsel.
Team & Environment
This position is part of the Office of Legal Affairs (OLA) division within DNR, reporting directly to the Chief Legal and Civil Rights Officer.
Benefits & Compensation
- Salary range: $82,892 - $97,669 annually.
