As a Principal Substation Secondary (P&C) Design Engineer, you will lead engineering teams in the delivery of complex electricity transmission substation projects. You will take ownership of technical workstreams, ensuring designs meet rigorous standards and client requirements across both FEED and detailed design stages.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide line management, mentorship, and career development for a team of engineers, supporting performance and professional growth.
- Lead the preparation and review of bids, including technical proposals, cost estimates, and resource planning for HV substation packages.
- Ensure technical accuracy and compliance in all protection and control system designs, adhering to IEC and IEEE standards.
- Chair design reviews, hazard assessments, and technical meetings to maintain design integrity and project alignment.
- Collaborate with primary systems, civil, structural, and project management disciplines to manage cross-functional interfaces.
- Support recruitment, workforce planning, and training initiatives to strengthen team capability.
- Engage with clients to build relationships, identify future opportunities, and contribute to business development goals.
- Oversee subcontractors and suppliers, ensuring technical and commercial alignment with project objectives.
- Participate in site inspections, factory acceptance tests (FAT), and site acceptance tests (SAT) as needed.
Qualifications and Experience
You should hold a degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent, with substantial experience in P&C design for substations, either in the UK or internationally. You must be progressing toward Chartered Engineer status through the IET and have a solid understanding of electrical standards including IEC and IEEE. Proven ability to manage design work under tight timelines, communicate effectively with stakeholders, and contribute to competitive bid submissions is essential. Candidates must have the legal right to work in the UK.
