Responsibilities
- Define the standard for engineering excellence at Xero.
- Strengthen technical capabilities and evolve architectural direction to support global product roadmap.
- Bridge the gap between product vision, strategy, and execution.
- Shape the technical roadmap to ensure technical decisions align with strategic goals.
- Solve engineering problems at scale, seeking clarity within complexity.
- Simplify complex systems and break down silos.
- Drive cross-functional collaboration.
- Focus on Hybrid Mobile Evolution: defining reference patterns for integration and performance in environments where native and React Native coexist.
- Lead Systemic Operational Excellence: define frameworks for SLOs and quality standards to strategically prevent issues.
- Act as a force multiplier through Capability Elevation: coaching lead engineers, recruiting top talent, and engaging with the broader tech community.
- Define and execute a vision for AI-led engineering to transform how software is designed, built, tested, and maintained.
- Deliver step-function improvements in development productivity and velocity across teams.
Requirements
- Extensive experience building and leading mobile applications in high-growth, large-scale environments.
- Experience with horizontally scaling mobile build and release pipelines.
- Experience architecting cloud-native backend services and APIs (AWS preferred).
- Hands-on integration across the mobile stack.
- Deep exposure to both native and cross-platform application development.
- Ability to ensure technical architecture and product strategy are closely linked.
- Focus on bridging technical possibility with beautiful customer experiences.
- Focus on strategic prevention rather than incident reaction, using delivery and production metrics to identify systemic improvements for security and scalability.
- Ability to thrive in ambiguity and act as a stabilising force.
- Ability to translate shifting business directions into high-level technical roadmaps.
- Bias for action tempered by systemic thinking.
- Prioritisation of incremental delivery to de-risk complex technical bets and simplify massive engineering challenges.
- Strong communication skills to establish alignment across the organisation.
- Ability to present complex technical trade-offs to leadership with clarity.
