As a Principal Overhead Line Engineer, you will lead the technical delivery of overhead line (OHL) projects up to 400kV, playing a central role in advancing the UK’s energy infrastructure. This position supports major national initiatives aimed at upgrading transmission networks across England and Wales, focusing on reliability, efficiency, and the integration of renewable power sources.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the engineering design and technical oversight of complex overhead line projects within multi-discipline teams
- Perform detailed line routing, structural analysis, and sag-tension calculations using PLS-CADD
- Develop loading trees, define design criteria, and conduct insulator and conductor blowout assessments
- Recommend appropriate damper systems and conduct strategic structural spotting for optimal placement
- Produce comprehensive clearance reports and select suitable conductors and insulators based on performance requirements
- Support feasibility studies, including conductor thermal rating analysis and layout optimization
- Ensure all designs comply with relevant industry standards and regulatory requirements
- Contribute to statutory planning processes and public consultation efforts with technical input
- Originate and review engineering outputs such as designs, reports, drawings, and calculation packages
- Support proposal development by defining project scope, timelines, resources, and technical objectives
- Conduct internal quality assurance on engineering deliverables to maintain high accuracy and consistency
Qualifications and Experience
Candidates must have a solid background in overhead line design for transmission systems up to 400kV. Demonstrated expertise in PLS-CADD modelling, structural analysis, and loading tree development is essential. You should be proficient in sag-tension calculations, conductor and insulator selection, and clearance assessments. Experience with statutory planning and public consultation processes is required, along with the ability to produce and verify complex engineering documentation.
Prior involvement in large-scale transmission infrastructure programs—particularly those aligned with national grid upgrades—is highly valued. Experience working within multidisciplinary teams and supporting early-stage project scoping and proposals will strengthen your application.
