AtkinsRéalis is hiring a Principal Land Safety Consultant

Shape the future of land safety on critical national programmes by leading safety assurance and strategy across complex Defence projects. In this role, you will serve as the go-to expert for land-based safety systems, guiding multidisciplinary teams through the full lifecycle of safety delivery — from concept through to certification and operational deployment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the primary authority on land safety within project teams, ensuring robust safety management systems and safety cases are developed and maintained
  • Advise on compliance with Defence Safety Authority (DSA) requirements and key standards such as Def Stan 00-056
  • Translate technical and regulatory challenges into practical, evidence-based safety solutions for clients and stakeholders
  • Lead the development and review of safety documentation, ensuring alignment with MOD and industry expectations
  • Support bid teams with technical input, risk assessments, and assurance strategies to strengthen proposals
  • Coach and develop junior and mid-level safety engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence
  • Identify new business opportunities through client engagement and technical credibility
  • Champion innovation in safety engineering, including the use of digital tools and data-driven methodologies

What You'll Bring

  • Proven experience delivering safety cases and managing safety processes at the enterprise, platform, or system level within Defence or safety-critical sectors
  • Familiarity with MOD, DSA, and Defence safety standards and regulatory frameworks
  • Ability to analyse safety data, identify risks, and recommend effective mitigation strategies
  • Strong communication and leadership skills, with experience influencing senior stakeholders and guiding technical teams
  • Track record in proposal development and bid support, with an eye for technical assurance and work-winning opportunities
  • Understanding of safety-critical environments, including interactions with major primes or government clients

Preferred Attributes

  • Knowledge of Ordnance, Munitions & Explosives safety principles
  • Experience with certification processes in Defence or civil sectors
  • Interest in digital safety engineering, including model-based approaches or data analytics
  • Engineering degree or equivalent qualification
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or active pursuit of professional registration
