The City of New York’s Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) is hiring a Principal Engineer, Forensic Engineering to ensure public safety by responding to emergencies involving compromised buildings and structures across New York City. You will provide expert engineering review and advice, representing the Department in critical legal and regulatory matters.
What You'll Do
- Respond to structural emergencies and incidents 24/7, including potential out-of-state assignments.
- Perform in-depth review of structural plans and advise on engineering issues for complex construction projects.
- Prepare objections in accordance with Construction Codes, Zoning Resolutions, and other applicable regulations.
- Review plans for a wide variety of building projects and temporary construction equipment in 2D, 3D, paper, and electronic formats.
- Meet with owners, Engineers of Record, and permitted General Contractors to review project compliance.
- Represent the Department as an expert and fact witness in legal proceedings, court cases, depositions, and hearings.
- Participate in industry outreach meetings and presentations related to the Existing Buildings Compliance portfolio.
- Perform audits of design documents, construction site operations, and test reports submitted by inspectors and licensed professionals.
- Act as a technical resource on historic construction, concrete, steel, wood, masonry, and temporary support systems.
- Provide interpretations of NYC Construction Codes and other applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
- Assist with NYC Construction Code revisions related to historic construction, structural, and foundation provisions.
- Prepare reports to assist in enforcement actions and issue violations and commissioners orders.
- Assist with the resolution of Stop Work Orders (SWOs), design errors, construction errors, and deficient engineering designs.
- Assist with the resolution of shoring, bracing, and demolition options on emergency projects.
- Attend training seminars and assist with data analysis to determine trends related to existing buildings.
- Support cross-training, incident support, special assignments, and project management for Existing Buildings Compliance.
What We're Looking For
- Four (4) years of full-time, satisfactory experience in civil engineering work.
- A valid New York State Professional Engineer’s License, which must be maintained for the duration of employment.
Nice to Have
- A master's degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university may be substituted for one year of the required civil engineering experience.
- At least one year within the last three years of experience as a major contributor or project leader on a complex project requiring additional and specific expertise in the disciplines needed to design or construct the project.
Team & Environment
You will be under the direction of the Deputy Director, Forensic Engineering, within the Forensic Engineering Unit (FEU) of the Department of Buildings.
Work Mode
This position operates on a hybrid schedule, with work locations in New York City.
