Perform venipuncture and capillary collection for both inpatients and outpatients, ensuring proper specimen handling from draw to transport. Conduct EKGs, pulse oximetry, and point-of-care testing as ordered, following quality control protocols for all equipment used.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect blood samples using approved techniques and equipment, verifying patient identity and test requirements prior to procedure
- Review physician requisitions to confirm medical necessity and prepare Advance Beneficiary Notices (ABNs) when needed
- Process specimens through centrifugation, aliquoting, labeling, and packaging according to laboratory standards
- Enter patient data accurately into Laboratory Information Systems and Hospital ADT platforms, including outreach specimen registration
- Verify patient demographics using master index systems such as Metricom or equivalent
- Assign accession numbers, log specimens, and ensure proper labeling for transport to central labs
- Monitor refrigerator temperatures and maintain records for specimen and supply storage
- Manage inventory by tracking supply levels, placing orders, and organizing storage areas
- Ensure accurate documentation of all procedures using both digital and manual recordkeeping systems
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent with completion of a recognized phlebotomy training program. Must obtain basic life support certification within three months of hire and maintain annual competencies. Prior hands-on experience in phlebotomy is required. This role supports multiple sites and may require travel between campuses based on operational needs.
Reliable attendance is essential, including availability during adverse weather and emergency conditions. Familiarity with Metricom, Laboratory Information Systems, and Hospital ADT systems is necessary for daily operations.
Work Environment
Onsite position with primary hours Monday through Friday, 8:45 AM to 5:15 PM. Travel may be required across outpatient locations to support coverage needs. This is an essential role in patient care, aligned with organizational standards of respect, teamwork, and inclusivity.
Compensation & Benefits
Hourly pay ranges from $19.32 to $36.70, determined by experience, skills, and internal equity. A signing bonus may be available based on eligibility determined during hiring. Position is represented by UFCW union. Employees observe holiday rotations with no more than every third holiday scheduled.
