UPMC Passavant is hiring a Patient Care Technician to support the Night Program on our Med/Surg Oncology Unit. This role is a valued step on the UPMC Inpatient Patient Care Support Career Ladder, offering structured opportunities for growth while performing core nursing assistant duties to enhance the patient experience.
What You'll Do
- Perform UPMC core nursing assistant responsibilities, including ADLs (bathing, feeding, toileting), vital signs, weights, I&O, and specimen collections.
- Assist with patient procedures, activities of daily living, and physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies.
- Provide feedback and report changes in patient status to the RN.
- Provide patient and family instruction under the direction of the RN.
- Apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints per physician or hospital protocol.
- Contribute to universal unit activities like responding to call lights, passing meal trays, and transporting patients.
- Document in the medical record according to established procedures.
- Complete clerical functions, suggest departmental changes, and support quality initiatives.
- Comply with safety policies, including standard precautions.
- Establish professional, respectful interpersonal relationships and effective communication with other departments.
- Report equipment malfunctions to the appropriate department.
What We're Looking For
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least 6 months of patient care experience OR status as a nursing student with at least one clinical rotation (required for Night Program eligibility).
- Successful completion of the UPMC patient care technician class and basic information system training.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- CPR certification based on AHA standards, including both didactic and skills demonstration.
- Understanding that access to medications is limited to distribution to the nurse.
Nice to Have
- Prior patient care experience is highly preferred.
