The Oregon Department of Human Services is hiring a Paralegal for the Trial Division, Civil Litigation Section of the Oregon Department of Justice. You will collaborate closely with Assistant Attorney Generals to investigate, analyze, and prepare cases, with a primary focus on defending state agencies in jury trials involving employment, civil rights, contract, and tort litigation.
What You'll Do
- Assist in trial and trial preparation, including organizing exhibits, preparing factual portions of pretrial orders, consulting on witnesses, preparing notebooks, tracking exhibits, taking notes, coordinating witnesses, and suggesting questions.
- Conduct factual investigations of cases, including arranging subpoenas, collecting documents from clients and third parties, and conducting witness interviews.
- Independently manage proposed pleadings and correspondence relating to cases.
- Draft discovery requests and responses for attorney review, including requests for production, interrogatories, and requests for admissions.
- Read, organize, and analyze document production from client agencies, third parties, and opposing parties.
- Assist in preparing for depositions, including identifying exhibits, preparing exhibit sets, and assisting during depositions.
- Work with expert witnesses or consultants, supplying information and documents necessary for their testimony and reports.
What We're Looking For
- An Associate degree in Paralegal or Legal Assistant Studies; OR Eighteen months of Paralegal experience; OR any combination of training and experience demonstrating proficiency in legal work, independent judgment, legal terminology, discovery and trial methods, legal ethics, and skill in preparing legal documents, interviewing witnesses, and explaining legal issues.
Nice to Have
- Experience working independently as a paralegal with a trial caseload.
- Experience reviewing, analyzing, and organizing large volumes of discovery documents, on paper and in databases such as Relativity, EDT, Summation, or Everlaw.
- Direct experience in trial.
- Experience working independently to prepare a busy team of lawyers for trial.
- Experience in working with clients in either written or oral communication.
- Professional experience as a paralegal (preference may be given over education alone).

This is a hybrid position based in either Salem, OR or Portland, OR.
