Canadian Medical Protective Association is hiring a Manager, Medico-Legal Estimates

Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain accurate cost estimates for each case type at case initiation, updating them promptly and regularly as new information becomes available on the specific case and in the overall environment
  • Establish processes to compare actual legal costs against AI-generated cost expectations and investigate any significant variances
  • Establish a protocol for addressing cost variances with MLS staff, and or legal counsel, grounded in the collected and modelled case financial data, to ensure a consistent and structured approach to medico-legal fees
  • Leverage collected case financial data to oversee the design, implementation, and ongoing maintenance of AI-driven models that accurately predict expected overall costs for various case types, ensuring reliable future use
  • Ensure data integrity, confidentiality, and compliance with CMPA’s data policies
  • Assist Finance, along with, Member Experience, and CMPA’s General Counsel to set realistic cost forecasts for each Provincial Counsel law firm
  • Provide Actuarial Services with detailed cost information for each case type to support their annual valuation process
  • Deliver actionable insights and reports to senior leadership to inform budgeting, risk management, and strategic decisions
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement to refine predictive models and enhance accuracy through machine learning and data feedback loops
  • Develops financial information, reports, and dashboards to support organizational decision-making and satisfy external stakeholder requirements related to legal costs
  • Develops and presents materials to Committees such as the Audit and Legal Services and Case Management Oversight committees
  • Provides strategic guidance and expert consultation to the CFO, Executive Director, Member Experience, Director, Medico-Legal Services, Director, Finance, and Executive leadership on financial planning, reporting, internal controls, and policy development, with a focus on legal expenditure management
  • Provides guidance to direct reports to both support their development and prioritize their efforts in support of corporate objectives
  • Creates and supports a team culture of continuous improvement and a work environment that fosters teamwork, collaboration, and inclusion

Requirements

  • Minimum 4-year university degree in Business, Data Science, Law, or an equivalent field of study
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive work experience managing legal case activities with an emphasis on analysis and modelling
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience leading and managing a team of professionals
  • Experience with organizing and delivering informative, thorough, and professional presentations to all audiences
  • Experience with legal cost structures and case management processes
  • Demonstrated experience with predictive analytics and data modelling
  • Ability to communicate complex information and concepts to a non-technical audience
  • Experience working with senior management, executive decision-makers, and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated experience navigating complex stakeholder conversations to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes
  • Experience with successfully delivering cross-functional projects and change initiatives
  • Proven ability to lead and engage a team of professionals, ability to coach, mentor, and motivate staff to achieve organizational and individual goals

Nice to Have

  • Background in utilizing AI to build models
  • Previous experience managing claims for an insurance company/case reserve processes
