What You'll Do
Oversee the full lifecycle of enterprise databases deployed on AWS RDS, including Aurora, MySQL, and SQL Server. Design and maintain highly available, multi-AZ architectures with robust disaster recovery capabilities. Implement automation to streamline operations, reduce manual effort, and improve deployment reliability.
Develop and enforce database governance standards, security controls, and operational policies. Integrate database changes into CI/CD pipelines to enable consistent, auditable releases. Lead database maintenance, including patching, version upgrades, and vulnerability remediation, with minimal service disruption.
Collaborate with engineering teams on schema deployment automation, migration strategies, and zero-downtime release models. Apply DevOps and SRE principles to enhance observability, scalability, and resilience. Use monitoring tools like CloudWatch and Datadog to proactively detect and resolve performance issues.
Conduct root cause analysis for critical incidents and lead post-mortems to improve system reliability. Establish KPIs for uptime, performance, and cost efficiency. Mentor database engineers, promote automation-first practices, and support capacity planning and workload forecasting.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Systems, or equivalent experience
- 10+ years of database operations experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role
- Proven expertise with AWS RDS platforms, including Aurora, MySQL, and SQL Server
- Strong experience with Infrastructure as Code using Terraform, CloudFormation, or CDK
- Deep understanding of backup/recovery, high availability, and disaster recovery strategies
- Experience integrating databases into CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or similar tools
- Proficiency in performance tuning, troubleshooting, and scripting with Python, Bash, or PowerShell
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with Delphix for data masking, virtualization, and test data management
- AWS certifications, particularly in Solutions Architecture or Database specialties
- Hands-on experience with container platforms such as EKS or ECS
- Knowledge of GitOps workflows and automation practices
- Background operating databases in 24x7, regulated environments
