Role Overview
As the Lead FX TD, you will guide the creation of advanced visual effects for high-profile VFX feature films. You'll take assets from upstream departments and transform them into dynamic, physically accurate simulations using Houdini and proprietary pipeline tools. Your work will form the backbone of complex sequences involving fire, smoke, water, cloth, fur, and large-scale destruction.
Key Responsibilities
- Acquire and prepare 3D elements from Build, Layout, and Animation teams for simulation
- Develop particle systems to achieve atmospheric and environmental effects
- Design and execute pyro simulations for fire, smoke, and explosive phenomena
- Generate rigid body dynamics for structural collapse and object interactions
- Produce fluid simulations with realistic behavior and surface detail
- Implement cloth, fur, and hair dynamics that respond naturally to motion and forces
- Ensure all simulations meet production standards for realism and integration
Required Expertise
- Proven track record delivering FX for multiple high-budget feature films
- Deep experience with effects such as fire, smoke, clouds, water, steam, and explosions
- Strong grasp of particle and voxel-based rendering workflows
- Keen attention to visual detail and animation timing
- Comprehensive knowledge of physical simulation methods in CG
- Extensive hands-on experience with Houdini for effects development
- Familiarity with pipeline challenges and efficient troubleshooting
- Working knowledge of node-based compositing, preferably in Nuke
- Understanding of compositing requirements to support downstream integration
Preferred Skills
- Background in other visual effects domains including television or gaming
- Broad technical direction experience across multiple VFX disciplines
- Proficiency in Maya for scene assembly and data preparation
- Scripting ability in Python, Hscript, or Mel for tool customization
- Experience working in Linux or Unix environments
