The Lead - Emergency Response is responsible for directing and maintaining comprehensive emergency response systems at a remote mining operation. This includes designing, delivering, and evaluating training programs for the Mine Rescue Team, ensuring all activities meet or exceed regulatory standards and industry best practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the Mine Emergency Response Plan and associated programs
- Establish and maintain a Credible Threat Risk Register to proactively identify and address potential hazards
- Oversee the structure, readiness, and performance of the Emergency Response Team, ensuring clear roles and accountability
- Ensure emergency equipment, communication systems, and life-saving devices are fully operational and regularly inspected
- Act as primary coordinator during emergency events, managing response operations using the Incident Command System (ICS)
- Facilitate cross-departmental coordination to strengthen emergency preparedness across all work locations
- Deliver and document safety training, including short courses and competency assessments, for personnel across multiple disciplines
- Support incident investigations, emergency operations centers, and post-event recovery efforts
- Assist in business continuity planning and the safe reintroduction of critical operations after disruptions
- Maintain accurate training records, compliance documentation, and emergency readiness logs
Qualifications
Candidates must bring over a decade of hands-on emergency response leadership, with at least five years dedicated to building and managing mine rescue programs in compliance with provincial or equivalent regulations. Direct firefighting, technical rescue, and hazardous materials response experience within mining or heavy industrial settings is essential.
Required certifications include BC Surface or Underground Mine Rescue accreditation, NFPA 1001 or 1081, NFPA 1072 Hazmat, NFPA 1006, and NFPA 1041 Level I Fire Service Instructor. A valid Class 3 or 4 driver’s license and current First Aid certification are mandatory.
Work Environment
This is an onsite role located at a remote mine site, following a 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off rotational schedule. The position requires physical stamina to perform demanding tasks over 12-hour shifts, including lifting up to 50 pounds and working in extreme weather conditions. Candidates must be comfortable living and working in close quarters and operating independently in a high-pressure environment.
Preferred Attributes
- Completion of ICS 100, 200, and 300 courses
- NFPA 1002 Apparatus Driver Operator certification
- Background as a medical responder or paramedic
- Experience introducing new safety-critical equipment and developing related training modules
- Strong interpersonal and presentation skills with the ability to consult effectively across teams
