About the Role

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is hiring a Lead AI Engineer to advance healthcare AI initiatives that enhance patient outcomes and operational efficiency. In this pivotal role, you will develop and train AI tools to automate and optimize clinical workflows, administrative tasks, and institutional operations.

What You'll Do

  • Collaborate with clinical, operational, and administrative leadership to design and architect AI-powered systems integrated with clinical and administrative platforms.
  • Translate strategic goals into actionable AI pilot initiatives and scalable implementation plans.
  • Define technical requirements, APIs, and infrastructure components for deploying AI solutions.
  • Ensure systems are modular, secure, and scalable across the institution.
  • Lead the deployment of AI solutions into production environments and ensure seamless integration with clinical and administrative systems.
  • Collaborate with IT, informatics, and clinical operations to ensure AI systems enhance existing workflows.
  • Establish monitoring protocols to ensure reliability, safety, and user satisfaction.
  • Optimize system performance, latency, and reliability in real-world clinical and operational settings.
  • Implement monitoring, logging, and alerting systems to ensure AI solutions meet safety and compliance standards.
  • Enforce responsible AI practices, including auditability, access controls, and human-in-the-loop safeguards.
  • Document system behavior and deployment protocols consistent with internal AI governance.
  • Stay current on advancements in agentic AI, cognitive architectures, and AI technologies.
  • Evaluate emerging tools and platforms for enterprise relevance.
  • Mentor peers and Analytics Services staff and contribute to internal best practices for AI engineering in healthcare.

What We're Looking For

  • Master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, data science, information technology, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years designing high-level architectures and developing solutions for large-scale AI/ML systems.
  • Strong background in industry use cases built on deep learning and machine learning (unsupervised and supervised techniques).
  • Expertise with deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow, Keras, and PyTorch.
  • Experience with time series analysis, anomaly detection, forecasting, predictive modeling, graph-based neural networks, Bayesian statistics, and text analytics.

Nice to Have

  • PhD in data science, computer science, computer engineering, information technology, or a related field.
  • 5+ years proven experience in AI/cognitive computing development and deployment.
  • Previous experience in business process analysis, design, and implementation.
  • Proficiency in AI technologies, machine learning, data analytics, and project management tools.
  • Strong technical acumen to understand and communicate AI product/feature development requirements.
  • Experience developing and integrating APIs for healthcare systems to ensure seamless interaction with AI models.
  • Experience utilizing computer vision algorithms and frameworks, including medical image classification, feature matching, edge detection, image segmentation, and deep learning models like Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs).

Technical Stack

  • Python with libraries (e.g., Pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn, TensorFlow, Keras, spaCy, OpenCV, TPOT).
  • MLOps or similar tools for managing the lifecycle of machine learning models.
  • Epic electronic health records, including Cogito and Nebula.
  • Machine Learning models and Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques.
  • Large Language Models (LLMs) using vector bases and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG).
  • Generative AI (GenAI) models.
  • Cloud platforms like Azure.

Team & Environment

This role is part of the Analytics Services team and involves close collaboration with analytics, data scientists, IT, informatics, and business stakeholders.

Benefits & Compensation

  • Salary range: $94,640 - $169,520 per year.

Work Mode

This is a remote position. Candidates may be located in Memphis, Tennessee.
