As a Laboratory Specialist, you will play a critical role in delivering reliable diagnostic services within under-resourced health facilities. Your work will directly support patient care by ensuring accurate testing, maintaining quality standards, and strengthening local laboratory capacity in crisis-affected areas.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee daily laboratory operations and supervise technical staff in government or project-run health facilities
- Train and mentor local laboratory personnel to improve technical proficiency and adherence to protocols
- Ensure consistent availability of reagents, equipment, and supplies through effective inventory management
- Implement quality assurance practices and maintain data accuracy across testing procedures
- Collect, analyze, and report laboratory data to support clinical and public health decision-making
Qualifications
Candidates must hold a degree or diploma in laboratory science, microbiology, or a related field with coursework in medical parasitology, bacteriology, and immunology. A minimum of two years of hands-on laboratory experience is required, including specimen handling (blood, stool, sputum) and quality-control procedures.
Applicants should have prior experience in low-resource or humanitarian settings, with demonstrated ability to lead, supervise, or train teams. Commitment to 9–12 month international assignments is essential.
Preferred Background
- Proficiency in French or Arabic (level B2 or higher)
- Experience with tropical or infectious diseases such as TB or HIV/AIDS
- Familiarity with laboratory information systems and survey methodologies
- Background in hospital-based diagnostics or epidemiology
- Holding a medical degree is advantageous but not required
