The Humanitarian Affairs Officer is responsible for amplifying the voices of communities impacted by conflict, displacement, and inadequate access to healthcare. By collecting firsthand accounts and field data, the officer helps shape advocacy efforts that reflect the realities faced by people in crisis zones. The role centers on ethical documentation, strategic communication, and upholding the principle of bearing witness as part of humanitarian action.
Key Responsibilities
- Document the human consequences of armed conflict, public health emergencies, and systemic neglect through interviews and field assessments
- Develop and implement advocacy approaches that align with humanitarian principles and organizational values
- Produce detailed, impartial reports on barriers to medical care, including exclusion of marginalized groups
- Collect and analyze qualitative data from patients, local communities, and field teams
- Advise on communication strategies that reflect MSF’s mission, especially when humanitarian access is obstructed
- Highlight critical issues such as attacks on healthcare, sexual violence in displaced populations, and gaps in emergency response
- Ensure testimonies and findings are used ethically to support advocacy without compromising safety or dignity
Qualifications and Experience
- At least two years of professional experience in humanitarian response, human rights, civil society, donor relations, legal advocacy, or related research fields
- Minimum one year working directly with affected populations in crisis or development settings
- Master’s degree in anthropology, political science, law, gender studies, international relations, or a related discipline
- Proven skills in qualitative data collection, human rights monitoring, or case documentation
- Strong ability to manage multiple priorities under pressure and meet strict deadlines
- Familiarity with the ethical and operational complexities of humanitarian work
- Fluency in French is required; additional languages such as Spanish, Arabic, or Portuguese are an asset
Work Environment
This position is based in a capital city within a volatile or post-conflict region, with regular travel to operational project sites. The role demands adaptability, cultural sensitivity, and resilience in challenging conditions.
