The West Virginia State Police is seeking an entry-level Forensic Scientist 1 to join our team. This full-time role begins with a probationary training period under supervision before you work independently to analyze evidence, issue forensic reports, and provide expert testimony in criminal cases.
What You'll Do
- Develop an understanding of discipline and laboratory-related protocols and procedures.
- Learn methodology for performing critical analysis of evidence in criminal cases.
- Accept and receive evidence while maintaining the chain of custody.
- Conduct basic examinations of suspected evidence, including controlled substances, biological materials, latent fingerprints, firearms, tool markings, toxicology samples, ignitable liquids, gunshot residue, and trace evidence.
- Document examination results and submit all required records.
- Maintain the general appearance, security, and maintenance of assigned office or laboratory areas.
- Ensure the proper use, maintenance, and security of all personal and issued equipment.
- Care for and maintain all assigned Division transportation equipment.
- Properly document, route, and disseminate all received messages and information.
What We're Looking For
- A Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university with a major in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, forensic sciences, natural sciences, or a related field.
- Ability to complete a successful background check and polygraph examination.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license.
Team & Environment
You will work under the direction of a trained analyst until authorized by the Laboratory Director or designee to work independently.
Benefits & Compensation
- Salary: $60,250
- Full-time position with state benefits.
