Company is hiring a Financial Counselor to support patient financial services for our Adult Outpatient Pavilion. In this role, you will ensure a smooth registration process, assess financial responsibility, and provide critical support to help patients navigate their payment options and insurance benefits.
What You'll Do
- Register patients by securing appropriate and accurate patient and insurance information.
- Validate insurance eligibility and collect co-payments.
- Enter registration data into appropriate systems.
- Provide quality customer service to patients, families, visitors, medical staff, clinicians, and co-workers.
- Assess patient financial responsibility through price estimation.
- Provide benefit education for all insured and uninsured patients.
- Assist patients in securing financial assistance and applicable public benefit options.
- Accept patient payments and act as back-up to the financial counselor/cashier where applicable.
- Reconcile accounts in an unbilled status.
- Problem solve and make referrals to outside resources as needed.
- Analyze financial data to determine documents needed for application approval and/or to establish payment arrangements.
- Perform daily activities with minimal supervision and function in a self-directed manner for routine tasks.
- Notify supervisor immediately of issues involving violation of VCUHS policies or procedures.
What We're Looking For
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum two years of experience requiring customer service skills and a patient/customer-centered focus.
- Previous experience with computers, Microsoft Office software, and navigating the Internet.
- Ability to analyze financial data to determine documents needed for application approval and/or to establish appropriate payment arrangements.
Nice to Have
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Healthcare Administration or a closely related field from an accredited program.
- Previous patient scheduling/registration work experience in a healthcare setting.
- Previous work experience in a healthcare setting and knowledge of medical terminology.
- Experience with medical insurance.
- Experience with appointment registration.
