About the Role

Company is hiring a Financial Counselor to support patient financial services for our Adult Outpatient Pavilion. In this role, you will ensure a smooth registration process, assess financial responsibility, and provide critical support to help patients navigate their payment options and insurance benefits.

What You'll Do

  • Register patients by securing appropriate and accurate patient and insurance information.
  • Validate insurance eligibility and collect co-payments.
  • Enter registration data into appropriate systems.
  • Provide quality customer service to patients, families, visitors, medical staff, clinicians, and co-workers.
  • Assess patient financial responsibility through price estimation.
  • Provide benefit education for all insured and uninsured patients.
  • Assist patients in securing financial assistance and applicable public benefit options.
  • Accept patient payments and act as back-up to the financial counselor/cashier where applicable.
  • Reconcile accounts in an unbilled status.
  • Problem solve and make referrals to outside resources as needed.
  • Analyze financial data to determine documents needed for application approval and/or to establish payment arrangements.
  • Perform daily activities with minimal supervision and function in a self-directed manner for routine tasks.
  • Notify supervisor immediately of issues involving violation of VCUHS policies or procedures.

What We're Looking For

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum two years of experience requiring customer service skills and a patient/customer-centered focus.
  • Previous experience with computers, Microsoft Office software, and navigating the Internet.
  • Ability to analyze financial data to determine documents needed for application approval and/or to establish appropriate payment arrangements.

Nice to Have

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Healthcare Administration or a closely related field from an accredited program.
  • Previous patient scheduling/registration work experience in a healthcare setting.
  • Previous work experience in a healthcare setting and knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Experience with medical insurance.
  • Experience with appointment registration.
