Role Overview

Join a global rail technology organization as a Maintenance Field Engineer based in Naples, Italy. This role focuses on ensuring the technical integrity and operational efficiency of railway vehicles throughout their service lifecycle. You will lead maintenance planning, configuration control, and data-driven improvements while working closely with engineering, operations, and procurement teams to meet contractual and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collect and analyze RAM data from in-service vehicles, structuring records to meet contractual obligations and operational reporting needs.
  • Manage vehicle configuration by maintaining accurate as-maintained records, ensuring full traceability and change control with support from system engineering teams.
  • Monitor infrastructure-based systems such as MRX, PanMon, and Gotcha to capture maintenance alerts and enable condition-based maintenance strategies.
  • Conduct performance reviews of engineering support systems and recommend enhancements for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support bidding processes by contributing technical and maintenance cost inputs for new contract proposals.
  • Update spare parts lists based on maintenance plans, RAM analysis, and field experience, ensuring alignment with mobilization and operational requirements.
  • Perform level of repair analysis (LORA) to determine optimal maintenance strategies and provide feedback to design and standards teams.
  • Support on-site maintenance activities, troubleshoot technical issues, and implement corrective actions in line with engineering guidance.
  • Develop technical specifications for depot tools, coordinate design reviews, and oversee installation, testing, and commissioning with operations teams.
  • Deliver training to team members or customers as needed, in collaboration with standards and training functions.
  • Lead failure investigations for out-of-warranty components, manage supplier warranties, and assess reparability and safety risks.
  • Review and validate maintenance manuals, proposing updates and improvements based on operational feedback.
  • Drive continuous improvement by designing new tools, optimizing maintenance regimes, and applying lessons learned from field data.
  • Support quality assurance by reporting failures and evaluating component reliability and safety implications.
  • Assist procurement in evaluating new or alternate suppliers to ensure engineering and quality requirements are met.
  • Contribute to engineering documentation for workshops, ensuring compliance with safety and maintenance plans from commissioning onward.
  • Support project teams with on-site technical analysis and contribute to the development of engineering practices and procedures.
  • Apply remote diagnostic data to validate vehicle performance and support predictive maintenance initiatives.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of three years of experience in railway vehicle maintenance engineering.
  • Proven background in maintenance planning, troubleshooting complex systems, and conducting RAMS analysis.
  • Ability to diagnose and analyze vehicle systems and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and pneumatic diagrams.
  • Familiarity with contract specifications and technical requirements in rail operations.
  • Degree in Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical, or Mechatronic Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Willingness to travel frequently for short-term assignments, with over 60% of time spent on-site.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Field engineering experience with railway fleets and maintenance programs.
  • Knowledge of train subsystems including traction, braking, HVAC, signaling, and onboard electronics.
  • Experience reviewing maintenance documentation from suppliers and managing configuration records.
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis tools and software configuration management principles.
  • Understanding of wheel set parameters and maintenance forecasting based on operational data.
  • Experience with SAP, ECM projects, homologation processes, and operational planning.
  • Working knowledge of industrial environments such as depots and maintenance facilities.
  • Proficiency in English and ability to collaborate in multicultural teams.

Work Environment

This is an onsite position based in Naples, Italy. Full-time presence at local depots and operational sites is required, with regular travel to support field activities. The role operates within a structured, safety-focused environment emphasizing technical precision, compliance, and continuous improvement.
