About the Role

Valard Construction is hiring an Estimator specializing in Substations and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects. You will develop complete cost estimates for utility construction projects ranging from $1M to $50M, analyze quotes, and support competitive tender packages.

What You'll Do

  • Develop complete estimates, including site visits, quantity take-offs, pricing, and estimate presentations for review.
  • Assemble estimates from various sources into a final, complete estimate with Engineering support.
  • Review and validate outsourced estimates with engineering support.
  • Incorporate historical data from past estimates, contracts, and final project costs into Valard's cost model.
  • Format estimates to meet Owners Reporting format requirements.
  • Review and understand Design Basis, Engineering Design Documents, and Basis of Estimate.
  • Prepare written deliverables for bid submission, including understanding of work, assumptions, and execution plans.
  • Provide estimating input on complex conceptual projects.
  • Guide non-estimating personnel on their estimating-related requirements.
  • Attend project planning sessions and team meetings to provide estimating input.
  • Interface and communicate effectively with the estimating team, management, clients, and industry contacts.
  • Develop relationships with subcontractors and suppliers for pricing.
  • Develop or assist in developing execution, sequencing, logistics, and preliminary project schedules.

What We're Looking For

  • Post-secondary education in Electrical Engineering, Journeyman Electrician, or a related field.
  • 10 years of utility construction industry experience with demonstrated estimating exposure OR 5 years of industry-specific estimating experience.
  • 3+ years of estimating experience on projects in the $1M to $50M range.
  • Experience in EPC estimating/execution and preparing written deliverables for bid submissions.
  • Demonstrated experience with InEight Estimating Software.
  • Technical knowledge of estimating practices, techniques, equipment, and conceptual estimating theories.
  • Knowledge of construction costs, budgets, and ability to develop a project schedule.
  • Ability to read drawings and specifications, and assess the completeness of construction documents.
  • Legal authorization to work in Canada with no restrictions.

Nice to Have

  • Knowledge and experience in Electrical Utility Construction, with a strong preference for Substations or Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project experience.

Work Mode

This is a hybrid role. You can be based in Calgary, AB; Vaughan, ON; or remotely from another location in Canada.
