About the Role

Common Room is looking for an Engineering Manager to grow and inspire our engineering organization. You will combine technical leadership with company-building impact, guiding our engineering strategy, scaling the team, and ensuring we deliver robust, reliable systems for our customers.

What You'll Do

  • Define and execute engineering strategy, aligning technical direction with business goals while balancing velocity, quality, and scalability.
  • Build and scale the team by recruiting, retaining, and mentoring world-class engineers and managers, fostering career growth and leadership development.
  • Drive execution at scale to ensure timely delivery of complex, high-impact projects across the stack, with a focus on backend systems and infrastructure.
  • Partner cross-functionally with product, design, and business stakeholders to shape the roadmap and deliver on company priorities.
  • Champion engineering excellence by establishing standards for architecture, observability, performance, and operational excellence.
  • Foster a psychologically safe culture where teams can innovate, take ownership, and do their best work.
  • Contribute to company-building initiatives like hiring practices, onboarding, and organizational design to support our growth as a startup.

What We're Looking For

  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • 2+ years leading teams, including people management and technical leadership.
  • Experience scaling engineering organizations at a fast-growing startup or tech company.
  • Strong judgment on tradeoffs, architecture, and tooling, favoring supported, stable technologies over trends.
  • Proven ability to deliver large, complex projects while keeping teams unblocked and motivated.
  • Deep familiarity with backend systems, distributed architecture, and cloud infrastructure.
  • A track record of building diverse, high-performing teams and fostering an inclusive, feedback-rich culture.
  • Ability to operate at both strategic and tactical levels, comfortable jumping from code reviews to board-level discussions.

Nice to Have

  • Node.js/TypeScript experience.

Team & Environment

You will serve as a bridge between engineering, product, design, and other stakeholders.

  • Salary: $180,000 to $220,000 plus meaningful equity ownership.
