About the Role

SOCOTEC UK & Ireland is seeking an experienced Ecologist to lead and conduct a wide range of ecological surveys, manage complex projects from inception to completion, and provide technical guidance to junior team members. This nationwide role within SOCOTEC's Environment & Safety Division requires autonomy, project ownership, and strong collaboration skills.

What You'll Do

  • Lead and conduct a wide range of ecological surveys, including surveys for bats, birds, reptiles, great crested newts, dormice, badgers, and other protected species
  • Independently undertake bat surveys utilising your Natural England Level 2 (or higher) bat licence and apply for mitigation licences with Natural England
  • Prepare and deliver high-quality Preliminary Ecological Appraisals and Biodiversity Net Gain Assessments
  • Produce comprehensive ecological survey reports and technical assessments to professional standards
  • Lead fieldwork operations, ensuring accurate data collection and maintenance of detailed field notes
  • Undertake 'out-of-hours' surveys, including ecological watching briefs and protected species survey works
  • Manage complex ecological projects from inception to completion
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior team members
  • Maintain accurate and well-organised data records in accordance with industry standards
  • Take full responsibility for project management, ensuring deadlines are met and work is completed to the highest standard
  • Contribute to business development activities including tender preparation and client liaison
  • Support related environmental works such as soil and groundwater monitoring where required

What We're Looking For

  • Natural England Level 2 (or higher) bat licence
  • Experience in ecological consultancy
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the ecological industry
  • Ability to work autonomously and take ownership of projects
  • Proven ability to lead fieldwork operations and manage complex ecological projects
  • Strong team player and mentor to junior colleagues
  • Ability to produce high-quality ecological reports and technical assessments to professional standards
  • Experience preparing and submitting mitigation licence applications to Natural England
  • Experience conducting Preliminary Ecological Appraisals and Biodiversity Net Gain Assessments
  • Experience with protected species surveys including bats, birds, reptiles, great crested newts, dormice, and badgers
  • Commitment to maintaining accurate and well-organised data records

You will join a large team of industry leading, expert professionals and get exposure to some of the best opportunities and challenges available.To be successful in this role, you will be able to demonstrate:The tasks you will undertake will include (but are not limited to): • Conduct comprehensive site inspections and regulatory assessments – Perform building inspections at various construction stages to ensure compliance with Building Regulations, review structural, architectural, and mechanical designs, assess building materials, construction specifications, and fire strategies against relevant Building Regulations and allied legislation • Supervise inspection activities and enforce regulatory compliance – Act as a Registered Building Inspector within your competency and registered class, supervise lower-class RBIs and graduate trainees, interpret and enforce national and local building regulations (including fire safety, energy efficiency, accessibility, and environmental requirements), and issue formal notices on compliance breaches under the Building Safety Act 2022 • Prepare detailed compliance documentation and provide consultancy services – Produce comprehensive inspection reports, compliance certificates, and regulatory approval documentation, maintain accurate records ensuring traceability and compliance with local authority requirements, and assist clients with Building Regulations consultancy advice where SOCOTEC is not acting as the Registered Building Control Approver Qualifications: To be a successful Building Inspector, you should be able to demonstrate: • Professional qualification and regulatory registration at senior level – Hold membership of RICS, CABE or equivalent (or be qualified by suitable experience), ensure CPD requirements are met to broaden and develop skills, and demonstrate compliance through registration as an RBI at an appropriate level (3G/3H) • Excellent communication and client relationship management skills – Demonstrate strong interpersonal and relationship-building abilities to work effectively with clients and deliver excellent client care across all interactions and project engagements • Self-starting problem-solver with technical expertise – Show ability to work independently as well as part of large project teams, analyse complex issues, develop suitable solutions, implement these solutions effectively, and keep up to date with changes in building codes, regulations, and industry best practices Additional Information: Why SOCOTEC?Join a thriving community of over 2,000 industry professionals who are passionate about making a real difference.
