As the Divisional Switchboard Chief Engineer, you will serve as the principal technical authority for panelboard and switchboard product lines within a major electrical systems manufacturer. Based in Sumter, SC, and operating under a hybrid schedule of three days onsite and two remote, this role reports to the Engineering Manager and plays a central role in shaping the future of power distribution solutions.
Technical Leadership & Innovation
You will lead the development of next-generation products by challenging existing design paradigms and advancing new concepts that feed into the company’s innovation pipeline. Your expertise will guide product roadmaps and ensure technical excellence across all stages of design and implementation. You will review engineering designs and product standards, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and market needs.
Standards Compliance & Regulatory Engagement
A core responsibility is maintaining compliance with UL and CSA standards, including oversight of certification files and adherence to safety protocols during testing. You will monitor evolving codes such as those from UL, NEC, CSA, NEMA, and CANENA, and represent the division in relevant standards organizations when necessary. You will also evaluate third-party proposals impacting product lines and drive coordinated responses at the division level.
Team Development & Cross-Functional Collaboration
You will mentor engineers across the organization, fostering technical growth and strengthening capabilities in power distribution design. Working in a matrixed environment, you will collaborate with production, legal, and customer support teams to resolve field issues and improve product reliability. Your analytical skills will be applied to complex technical challenges, including root cause analysis and resolution of field notifications (VN).
Qualifications & Requirements
- Minimum of 10 years in product design for power distribution equipment, with deep familiarity with UL standards including UL50, UL67, and UL891
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited institution
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Enovia, and Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Strong written and verbal communication, with the ability to influence stakeholders and present technical findings
- Willingness to travel up to 10% of the time
Preferred Background
- Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) certification
- Experience supporting legal or liability assessments as a technical expert
- Past leadership role in a UL standards committee

This position operates under a hybrid model with a primary location in Sumter, SC. The company offers competitive compensation ranging from $130,000 to $190,000 annually, eligibility for a variable incentive program, and a comprehensive benefits package including health and welfare, retirement plans, and paid time off.
