About the Role

Bellroy is building its own global retail footprint, starting with a major expansion in the United States. As Director of Retail, you will have full scope and responsibility to lead this initiative, opening more than 15 stores in strategic cities over the next 3-5 years. You will own the strategy, site selection, lease negotiations, operational playbooks, P&L performance, and team leadership to establish premium, experiential hubs that deepen customer relationships.

What You'll Do

  • Lead the strategy, site selection, lease negotiations, operational playbooks, P&L performance, and team leadership for Bellroy's U.S. retail expansion.
  • Open more than 15 stores in strategic U.S. cities within a three-to-five year timeline.
  • Establish premium, experiential hubs designed to deepen relationships with existing customers and attract new ones.
  • Travel significantly for scouting potential store sites, visiting operational locations, and meetings at the Melbourne HQ.
  • Walk potential U.S. store sites with retail brokers to assess location viability.
  • Negotiate lease terms for flagship stores.
  • Review fit-out designs with the Creative team to ensure they are on-brand and on-budget.
  • Finalize operational playbooks for store openings, covering staffing, training, and launch timelines.
  • Partner with Marketing to plan activation calendars for store openings.
  • Coach Area Managers on interpreting P&L reports and identifying cost-saving opportunities.
  • Model ROI projections for a mix of long-term leases and short-term pop-up formats.
  • Partner with Operations to refine inventory strategies tailored to local market preferences.

What We're Looking For

  • 10+ years in premium, design-led retail leadership.
  • A proven track record of scaling store networks across multiple geographies.
  • Experience leading multi-site P&L management, delivering both brand elevation and commercial results.
  • Ability to balance location strategy, operational efficiency, and customer experience to drive profitability from day one.
  • Skill in site selection, lease negotiation and fit-out project management.
  • Experience building high-performing, customer-obsessed teams, from Area Managers to Store Managers.
  • Ability to create operational standards and retail KPIs that scale without compromising quality.
  • Thrive in cross-functional environments, partnering with wholesale, creative, marketing, and operations teams.
  • Can navigate rapid growth and change while keeping teams focused and engaged.

Nice to Have

  • Have helped pioneer an owned retail strategy for a brand by opening store numbers 1 through 20.
  • Experience working with retail store development in both U.S. and international markets.
  • Experience in premium or design-focused lifestyle brands.
  • A strong network in retail real estate, construction and operations.
  • Experience testing and scaling new store formats, pop-ups, or experiential concepts.

Team & Environment

You will have a direct line to senior leadership and be backed by an engaged cross-functional team.

Work Mode

This role is based locally within the specified country. Preferred locations are within the U.S. (East Coast – Boston, NYC or DC metro areas; West Coast – LA metro or SF/Bay Area) or Australia.
