About the Role
This role involves analyzing customer-submitted designs to identify potential manufacturing challenges and recommending design improvements to enhance producibility, reduce lead times, and lower costs.
Responsibilities
- Review 3D CAD models and technical drawings submitted by customers
- Identify design elements that may complicate or delay manufacturing
- Provide actionable feedback to improve design for manufacturability
- Collaborate with manufacturing partners to understand process limitations
- Assess design feasibility across multiple fabrication methods
- Communicate technical concerns clearly to non-engineering stakeholders
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of machining, sheet metal, and 3D printing capabilities
- Develop standardized feedback templates for common design issues
- Support the development of automated DFM analysis tools
- Ensure recommendations align with cost, lead time, and quality goals
- Track and report on recurring design challenges
- Work cross-functionally with sales and customer support teams
- Contribute to internal documentation for design guidelines
- Evaluate new manufacturing technologies for DFM relevance
- Assist in training new team members on DFM best practices
- Use geometric dimensioning and tolerancing knowledge to assess designs
- Identify opportunities to standardize features for easier production
- Assess material suitability based on design requirements
- Evaluate wall thickness, draft angles, and other critical features
- Ensure designs meet industry-specific compliance standards when applicable
- Support root cause analysis for production failures linked to design
- Maintain consistency in feedback across team members
- Stay current with advancements in manufacturing processes
- Help refine internal DFM checklists and evaluation criteria
- Participate in product improvement initiatives
